Artium has developed a dedicated PDI cloud probe and demonstrated its capabilities for airborne applications. A dual-size range PDI cloud probe is currently in the final stages of development and testing. Artium is also working on several advances to the icing/cloud probes to ensure reliable and accurate measurement of the particle size distribution, shape measurement, and liquid and ice water content measurements aimed at: - making it compact,
- decreasing the instrument power requirements,
- enhancing the measurement dynamic range,
- enabling sizing of spherical and non-spherical particles,
- discriminating between liquid drops and ice particles,
- measuring water content in the liquid and solid phases, and
- providing for extended periods of data logging using the existing systems on the aircraft and significantly decrease instrument cost.
